Secret message mug

Type a short message to turn it into binary. It looks like a row of 0s and 1s to everyone else. Only someone who knows the code can read it.

How it works

  1. Type a message up to 16 characters, like a name, an inside joke or "Merry Christmas".
  2. We turn each letter into 8 bits of binary code.
  3. Pick the mug and the code is filled in for you. We print it, and they get a mug that hides your message in plain sight.

Merry Christmas becomes:

01001101 01100101 01110010 01110010 01111001 00100000 01000011 01101000 01110010 01101001 01110011 01110100 01101101 01100001 01110011

Put this message on a mug ($18)

How they decode it

Each group of 8 digits is one letter. They can work it out with the binary alphabet, or paste the code into the binary to text translator. Half the fun is watching them figure it out.

Want a different secret? Put a birthday in binary or a name in binary on the mug instead.

Questions

Is this a color-changing mug?

No. The message is printed in binary code, so it is always visible but only readable by someone who knows binary. That is what keeps it secret.

How long can the secret message be?

Up to 16 characters, including spaces. Each character is 8 bits, so "Merry Christmas" (15 characters) is 120 digits.

Can I put the secret message on something other than a mug?

Yes. The same code fits on a tee, hoodie, phone case, card wallet or baby onesie.

Will they be able to read it?

Anyone can decode it with a binary translator. Tell them it is binary, or leave it as a puzzle.
